Title: "Neural Basis of Motor Preparation and Cortical Prosthses"

Concept sketch of cortically-controlled prostheses. Several cortical areas participate in the preparation and execution of natural arm movements. Neural prostheses measure electrical neural signals using arrays of chronically-implanted electrodes, extract action potential times for each neuron on every electrode and, finally, estimate the desired arm movement and generate control signals for guiding prosthetic devices. Motor prostheses use these signals to generate a continuous movement of an effector device while communication prostheses select from a discrete set of targets.

New neurons in the adult brain. The brown cells to the left are neural stem cells generated in the hippocampus. About two weeks later, they have become neurons. After a successful learning experience, more of these neurons will remain in the adult brain (Siste, Glass & Shors, 2007)
